Exploring Care Management for Older Adults with Illnesses as Family Members’ Responsibility : The need for Social Workers’ Support Services in Nigeria

Introduction: Aging oftentimes comes with health-related issues. Usually, family members are obliged to provide care management for older adults. They must perform this task despite their limited knowledge of patients’ health conditions. Hence, securing adults illnesses becomes a dilemma consideration. Aims: Older require support in managing This study hopes promote the following: First, understanding how perceive caregiving. Second, insight into members’ challenges. Third, explore need geriatric services providing Methods: The employed qualitative research method. Focus Group Discussion was utilized elicit data from 24 participants admitted four facilities at Enugu-North, Nigeria. Results: Findings indicated that perceived as filial responsibility should be provided till demise. However, majority experienced difficulties effect, other major concerns found include age and adult’s attitude, financial challenges, changing contemporary society, caregiving stress due recipient’s status. While many preference traditional medicine an alternative rapidly increasing service charges owing lagging support; others were less reliant on governmental welfare services. Conclusions: With government implementing aging policies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Civil Society (CSOs) collaboration social workers can help develop care-aid programs adults’ healthy wellbeing.
